Entries for the medal design competition for the 2020 Ontario Numismatic Association (ONA) Convention are due by Aug. 31 of this year.
Next year’s 58th Annual ONA Convention will be hosted by the newly formed Hamilton Coin Society on May 22-24 in nearby Burlington, Ont.
Participation in the design competition is open to all ONA members and clubs in good standing and submitted designs will appear in the November-December 2019 issue of The Ontario Numismatist.
ONA members will be invited to vote on a winning design until Dec. 31, with the winner announced about two weeks later.
According to organizers, a “successful design” will:
- celebrate something relating to the Burlington or Hamilton areas;
- contain a main design element appearing three-dimensional in nature and “with reasonably high but not ultra-high relief features”;
- include the lettering “58th Annual O.N.A. Convention” above and “Host Hamilton Coin Society” below; and
- include the dates and location of the convention.
The final 38-millimetre silver medal will weigh about one ounce and be struck with a Proof-like finish, with the three-dimensional design elements featuring a cameo (frosted) appearance against mirror-like fields. The metal composition for the other medals is yet to be chosen but is likely to include silver, cartridge brass and copper or commercial bronze.
The obverse will feature the common ONA design used on previous convention medals.
