A $1,000 “Devil’s Face” specimen banknote—one of only seven printed—is expected to bring upwards of $35,000 USD (about $45,500 Cdn.) at the Long Beach Expo World Currency Signature Auction hosted by Heritage Auctions next month.
Offered as Lot 26194, the 1954 Series banknote (BC-36S) is described by auctioneers of the Sept. 6-10 sale as having “four wide margins and excellent color,” which are common traits of this high-denomination specimen.
“In the Bank of Canada sale in 1999, only seven Specimens of the Devil’s Face $1000 were made available and this is the first time that we have offered an example,” reads the auction catalogue.
This example was certified by Paper Money Guaranty as Choice Uncirculated-64.
There’s an opening bid of $12,500 USD (about $16,250 Cdn.) and a pre-sale estimate of between $25,000 USD (about $32,500 Cdn.) and $35,000 USD.
