Canada joined 15 countries whose flags grace the obverse of Ukraine’s first commemorative coin issued since the beginning of Russia’s renewed invasion this February.
The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) released its first wartime issue, “In Unity, Strength,” in silver and cupro-nickel this July to begin a new series, “My Immortal Ukraine.” Struck by the Ukrainian Mint’s facility in the capital Kyiv, the coin features a design by three artists, Alina Maliuta, Serhii Topkin and Sviatoslav Ivanenko.
The obverse features the flags of each nation that has provided support to Ukraine via funding, weapons, military advisors, humanitarian assistance and moral support.
In addition to Canada, the other countries featured on the coin include the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Japan, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. An inscription above the flags reads “IN UNITY STRENGTH” in both English and Ukrainian.
The reverse features Ukraine’s national crest surrounded by eight pairs of clasped hands and a colourized ribbon in blue and yellow, Ukraine’s national colours. The NBU will issue 5,000 silver coins and 250,000 cupronickel coins.
During a short ceremony at the NBU in July, Ukrainian officials presented silver coins to representatives from the embassies of each country featured on the obverse.
