UK mint releases 50p to celebrate 10th anniversary of The Snowman and The Snowdog

The 10th-anniversary coins were released by the UK’s Royal Mint.

The Royal Mint has revealed a collectable 50p coin to celebrate ten years since the release of The Snowman and The Snowdog.

The collectable 50p coin celebrating the heart-warming story of The Snowman and The Snowdog features queen Elizabeth II’s portrait feature on the obverse side of the coin.

Following the popularity of The Snowmancoin series, the 2022 design tells the story of a boy, Billy, who discovers the original snowman-making kit hidden under his bedroom floorboards. Billy builds the snowman and, with a little leftover snow, a snowdog. That night, the two come to life and Billy joins them on an enchanting adventure.

For the fifth consecutive year, award-winning illustrator Robin Shaw has worked with The Royal Mint, to produce the design celebrating The Snowman and The Snowdog. The Royal Mint has introduced innovative digital colour printing technology to bring the design to life, keeping true to the hand-drawn, nostalgic quality of Robin Shaw’s original sketches.

“The Royal Mint first celebrated the heart-warming tale of The Snowmanon official UK coins in 2018.,” said Rebecca Morgan, director of collector services at the UK mint. “We are delighted to introduce another collectable 50p coin to the series celebrating ten years since the release of The Snowman and The Snowdog. This year’s design is just as charming as ever and features an exclusive design by award-winning illustrator Robin Shaw.

The Snowman and The Snowdog coin beautifully captures the festive magic of a tale that has become a much-loved classic. We hope collectors will love the design as much as we do at The Royal Mint with the coin making the ideal Christmas gift for loved ones.”

“It’s a joy to be revisiting The Snowdog after 10 years,” said Shaw.  I’ve always been rather pleased when he’s around and imagined him keeping The Snowman company when we’re not looking.”

This is the fifth commemorative Snowman coin released by The Royal Mint in collaboration with Snowman Enterprises Ltd and officially licensed by Penguin Ventures (part of Penguin Random House UK), with the first coin released in 2018.
