The Week in Shows (April 8-14)

There are five major shows on the docket this week.

First up is the final day of the National Postage Stamp and Coin Show, which is being held at the Hilton Mississauga/Meadowvale on 6750 Mississauga Rd. in Mississauga, Ont. The show will be open today from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and admission and parking are both free. The show boasts a 47-dealer bourse, a combined coin and stamp auction, a world-class competitive philatelic exhibition and two high-profile seminars.

CHATHAM, ONT.

Also taking place today is the Kent Coin Club Spring Coin Show, which is being held at the Active Lifestyle Centre on 20 Merritt Ave. in Chatham, Ont. The show is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and admission and parking are both free. A free token or foreign coin will also be given to all children attendees complements of the Kent Coin Club. The bourse will include 25 dealer tables of numismatic items.

NUPHILEX

Later this week, on April 13-15, Nuphilex will be held at Complex EVO on 420 Sherbrooke St. W. in Montreal, Qué. The combined coin and stamp show will be open on April 13-14 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and on April 15 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is $5 on April 13-14 and free on April 15. Early bird admission is $25 beginning on April 13 at 8 a.m. Proceeds will be be donated to Quebec Autism Society and Miriam Home.

MICHIGAN

Also on April 13-15 is the Michigan State Numismatic Society’s 63rd Annual Spring Convention and Show, which will be held at the Macomb College Expo Center on 14500 East 12 Mile Rd. in Warren, Mich. The show is slated to feature more than 120 dealer tables, a variety of educational programs, young numismatists events and competitive exhibits.

Canadian numismatist Brett Irick will lead a presentation at the Michigan show on April 13 at 1 p.m. Entitled “A Beginner Type Set of Mexican Coins,” the talk will offer an overview of the “30 or so coins that make a good basic type set of affordable Mexican coins produced over the last five centuries.” Also to be discussed are the reference texts that a collector of this material may want to acquire. A PowerPoint presentation will be complimented by an opportunity to review the coins.

Irick, a retired Ford Motor Company Engineering Manager, is the current president of the Michigan State Numismatic Society, governor and vice president elect of Central States Numismatic Society and a director of the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association.

BURNABY, B.C.

On April 14-15, the Coins, Stamps and Collectibles Show will be held at the Nikkei Centre on 6688 Southoaks Cres. in Burnaby, B.C. Hosted by the North Shore Numismatic Society, the show will be open on April 14 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and on April 15 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The bourse will feature 40 tables of coins, stamps, banknotes, tokens, medals, postcards, art, pins and more. Free underground parking is available on site, and admission is $2 each day or $3 for both days (or free for children aged 16 and under if accompanied by an adult).
