The Royal Canadian Mint has launched its seventh numismatic catalogue of the year, continuing its celebration of the summer season with a number of new coins.
Highlights of the Mint’s offerings include a $20 Fine silver coin – dubbed Summer Storm – that’s joining the Weather Phenomenon series. It uses a new technological effect that produces a “life-like flash of lightning bolts” when viewed under ultra-violet light (included with the coin), said representatives from the Mint.
Another highlight is the world’s first coin to combine colour and glow-in-the-dark paint with a borosilicate art coloured glass. This $20 Fine silver coin, The Universe, evokes the wonder and amazement of staring up at the night sky. Designed by Canadian artist Loïc Beaumont-Tremblay, the coin depicts the Mont-Mégantic Observatory nestled in the forest underneath a clear summer night sky. What’s more, each coin is unique because no two hand-made borosilicate glass inserts are the same.
Other highlights include a $10 Fine silver coin, Adventure Canada: Whitewater Rafting (second in the series), by artist Ken Ryan; a $20 Fine silver and $350 gold coin, Imposing Alpha Wolf, both by artist Maurade Baynton; a $10 Fine silver coin, Colourful Songbirds of Canada: Violet-Green Swallow (fifth in the series), by artist Derek Wicks; a $125 Fine silver coin, Conservation Series: The Whooping Crane (first in the series), by artist Luc Normandin; a 50-cent gold coin, Sea Creatures: Lobster, designed by Emily Damstra; a $3 Fine silver coin, 400th Anniversary of Samuel de Champlain in Huronia, designed by Laurie McGaw; a $20 Fine silver coin, The Canadian Home Front: Canada’s First Submarines during the First World War, designed by Yves Bérubé; a five-ounce Fine silver coin, Big Coin Series 50-Cent Coin, designed by Thomas Shingles; a $20 Fine silver coin, Forests of Canada: Columbian Yew Tree, by artist Julius Csotonyi; a five-cent Fine silver coin, Legacy of the Canadian Nickel: The Beaver (sixth in the series), with an original design by G. E. Kruger-Gray; a $10 Fine silver coin, Canoe Across Canada: Exquisite Ending (sixth in the series), designed by Greg Banning; a $30 Fine silver coin, Looney Tunes Classic Series: The Rabbit of Seville; and a specimen set, Baby Raccoon, featuring the work of artist Clinton Jammer on a special $2 bimetallic coin.
