The fearsome battle between St. George and the Dragon makes a dramatic entrance on a new bullion coin range from the Royal Mint.
The reverse design by Jody Clark features a dynamic depiction of the fight between good and evil, with St. George driving his lance into the body of the beast lurking below his rearing horse.
Dating back to around the 11th century, the tale of St George and the Dragon has been revisited many times in texts and art, inspiring some of the world’s finest artists. It has proved an enduring theme for coin designs, with Benedetto Pistrucci’s interpretation on the reverse of the sovereign from 1817 perhaps the most celebrated and well-known.
This coin release is the first in a series of bullion coins that will explore this legendary tale. The St. George and the Dragon coin is available to investors and collectors in a range of gold and silver editions, including a special one-kilogram silver bullion coin. The reverse features a contemporary depiction of St. George and the dragon by Jody Clark, while the obverse bears the coinage portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings. The coins are struck in .999 silver and .9999 gold.
