Saugeen club folds after three years

Faced with a limited membership roll exacerbated by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Saugeen Coin Society (SCS) recently announced it’s ceasing operations.

The SCS launched in September 2017 in Hanover – a southwestern Ontario town of about 7,650 people – and boasted about 20 members at its peak nearly two years ago. At its final meeting this March, however, club officials decided to fold the group, citing a lack of membership to fill executive vacancies plus COVID-19 restrictions preventing future meetings and events.

All of the funds remaining in SCS coffers were donated to the Ontario Numismatic Association (ONA), which funded the club’s start-up costs in 2017.

“In speaking with one of the charter members, there are many challenges to overcome when trying to start a new club, one of which is the temptation to do too much in a short span of time with few resources and only a handful of volunteers,” wrote Peter Becker, Waterloo Coin Society (WCS) secretary and newsletter editor, in one of his club’s recent newsletters.
