Royal Mint unveils first coin designs of 2025

The Royal Mint has revealed five new coin designs for 2025, commemorating key milestones and anniversaries in British history. From the Red Arrows to the modern railway, these coins celebrate significant figures, institutions, and events that have shaped the nation.

The coins are part of the 2025 Annual Set, which will be available for purchase starting Jan. 2. The set includes two 50p coins, two £2 coins, and a £5 coin, all meticulously designed to honor these notable moments in history.

The Red Arrows are featured on one of the 50p coins, marking 60 years since their first display. Designed by Nigel Tudman, the reverse shows three of the team’s distinctive Hawk T1 aircraft in flight, complete with their iconic colored trails. Since their debut in 1965, the Red Arrows have performed nearly 5,000 displays across 57 countries.

Another 50p coin commemorates those who contributed to the Second World War effort. It depicts the 1939–45 Star, Defence Medal, and War Medal, symbolizing the extraordinary contributions of millions during the conflict.

A £2 coin celebrates the 200th anniversary of the modern railway. Designed by William Webb, the reverse highlights George Stephenson’s groundbreaking steam locomotive, Locomotion No. 1, which made its historic 26-mile journey in 1825.

The Royal Observatory, Greenwich, is honored with another £2 coin marking its 350th anniversary. The design, featuring the Shepherd Gate Clock, Polaris, and the Prime Meridian, pays tribute to the institution’s pivotal role in navigation and timekeeping.

The £5 coin celebrates the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, marking 125 years since her birth. The reverse design includes a portrait originally featured on her 80th birthday coin in 1980, a nod to her enduring popularity as a figure of strength and resilience.

Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative doin at The Royal Mint, expressed enthusiasm for the set: “From celebrating the world-renowned Red Arrows to commemorating the life of The Queen Mother, each coin has been carefully crafted as a lasting tribute to these moments in British history. They will be cherished by collectors for generations.”

The coins will be available in various finishes, including precious metals and base proof options, with prices starting at £39.50. Throughout 2025, individual coins from the set will also be made available for purchase.

Starting Jan. 4, visitors to the Royal Mint Experience will have the chance to strike their own £2 coin. This exclusive design features flora representing the four nations of the United Kingdom: a rose for England, a daffodil for Wales, a thistle for Scotland, and a shamrock for Northern Ireland.

The 2025 Annual Set showcases the Royal Mint’s dedication to preserving and celebrating Britain’s rich history, ensuring these stories live on in the hands of collectors around the world.
