The numismatic community mourns the passing of Christina M. Smith, a longtime coin dealer based in Toronto, Ont. She passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025, at the age of 64.
Known to her friends, colleagues, and customers as Christine, she operated Christina M. Smith Numismatics, offering a range of services, including retail and wholesale transactions, auctions, appraisals, estate liquidation, and online sales. Her expertise spanned a wide variety of numismatic items, including United States coins, gold coins, early type coins, and currency.
Christine was the daughter of the late Ingrid K. Smith, a distinguished figure in Canadian numismatics. Ingrid made significant contributions to the field, co-founding the International Coin Certification Service (ICCS) in 1986 alongside Bill Cross and Brian Cornwell to enhance market confidence and support the hobby in Canada. She also owned and managed the Torex Coin Show, one of Canada’s most prestigious numismatic events.
Continuing the family’s numismatic tradition, Christine’s brother, Brian Smith, is the current owner of the esteemed Torex Coin Show. Under his leadership, Torex has remained a cornerstone event for collectors and dealers, reflecting the Smith family’s enduring influence in the numismatic community.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home & Chapel. Christine’s passing marks the loss of a familiar figure in the numismatic world. Her family’s legacy, spanning multiple generations, has left a lasting impact on Canadian numismatics.
