The 2017 convention of the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA) begins this Tuesday, July 18 in Boucherville, Qué.
This year’s show is being held at Hôtel Mortagne on 1228 Nobel St. in Boucherville, which is just east of Montréal on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River. The bourse and exhibit hall will be open to the public on July 21 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; July 22 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; July 23 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. In addition to more than 60 dealer tables, the convention will also boast an extensive auction, a vast offering of competitive exhibits, an educational symposium and a variety of meetings, presentations and social gatherings throughout the six-day event. Several day tours have also been planned for the days leading up to the convention.

The convention is being organized by host club l’Association des Numismates et des Philatélistes de Boucherville (ANPB), which has previously organized the RCNA’s annual gathering in Montréal in 1992 and 1996.
SESQUICENTENNIAL MEDAL SERIES
Earlier this year, the RCNA invited its member clubs to participate in a joint initiative to produce a series of numismatic medals commemorating the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation. To support this celebratory initiative, the RCNA commissioned a 38-mm commemorative die for use by its member clubs, each of which completed the medals with a club design on the opposite side. The RCNA commissioned the commemorative die at two private mints in Canada—Pressed Metal Products in Vancouver, B.C. and the Mississauga Mint in Mississauga, Ont.
While the medals’ reverses feature each respective club design, each obverse will depict the official Canada 150 logo created by Ariana Cuvin, of Toronto, Ont. The logo was chosen from more than 300 entries in a nation-wide contest, in which students were invited to submit designs to represent the 150th anniversary of Confederation.
Only 50 complete sets of this sesquicentennial medal series, in which 27 club participated, will be produced. The RCNA will be selling a “very limited” number of complete sets of its sesquicentennial medal series at the convention later this week.
“It’s going to be quite the collectible item to get a hold of,” said RCNA President Henry Nienhuis.
