Large Nuphilex sale features lots to sift through

By Bret Evans

According to auctioneer Louis Chevrier, sharp eyes and a bit of time could pay off for bidders at the upcoming Nuphilex sale, to be held March 26 in Montreal.

"There are no magic items, but it is a fairly balanced catalogue," the owner of Lower Canada Auction told Canadian Coin News. "A lot of it is raw and bulk material."

He went on to explain that the raw material is from a regular consignor, and the coins haven't been picked through before going into the sale.

"He has so much material that I didn't have time to go through," Chevrier said. "I told him that and he was happy to consign it to the bag."

Chevrier said the same consignor has placed lots in previous sales, and some bidders have done well.

One buyer purchased a lot for the value of the silver, and found two coins worth more than hammer price of the lot, he added.

"He sold the rest and got two good coins for free," Chevrier said. "The one who takes the time to see it will get the good deals."

There are several bulk lots of certified coins, which he said were conservatively graded and opening with low reserves.

There are some coins that could attract attention.

Lot 322 is a 1925 5-cent piece, described by Chevrier as probably the best coin in the sale. It is graded ICG MS-64 and CCCS MS-64 and estimated at $9,000.

Among the 50 cents are two examples of the 1947 Maple Leaf Curved Right 7 variety. Although a tough find, Chevrier said both are impaired. One, lot 531, is ICCS F-12 and polished with an estimate of $2,250; the other, lot 532, is ICCS SP-60, but harshly cleaned, estimated at $4,950.

Chevrier said there are only a few tokens, normally a common item in Nuphilex sales, probably because consignors were waiting for the release of the 2010 reference on the subject. Similarly, there is not a lot of paper, but he said there is a good selection of medals.

The sale also includes world coins and Mint products. With a total of 858 lots, it is one of the largest sales to be conducted by Lower Canada Auction.
