New Issues: Royal Mint’s final ‘Round Pound’

This year marks the end of an era for one of Britain’s most beloved coins.

The Royal Mint recently issued its final “round pound,” offering collectors one last chance to own the famed £1 coin before it passes from currency to history. Available in Brilliant Uncirculated; silver Proof piedfort; and silver Proof compositions, this farewell coin will not enter circulation as the round £1 coin will be phased out, making way for a new 12-sided coin in 2017.

The round pound was introduced in 1983 and has been decorated with patriotic designs for more than three decades. The U.K.’s heraldic beasts are captured on this last edition of the round £1 coin in an original design by Gregory Cameron. These mythical creatures represent each of the U.K.’s home nations.

Both coins have a 22.5-mm diameter; the silver coin weighs 9.5 grams and the silver piedfort coin weighs 19 grams.
