New coin celebrates UK’s Olympic and Paralympic legacy

The United Kingdom, with its rich history of participation in every modern Olympic Games since 1896 and its status as the birthplace of Paralympic sport, is set to celebrate its sporting heritage with a new commemorative coin. The coin honors the athletes of Team GB and ParalympicsGB who have consistently achieved global acclaim and admiration.

Designed by Charis Tsevis, the coin’s reverse features mosaic artwork depicting a Team GB athlete and a ParalympicsGB para-athlete side by side, backed by the Union flag. This striking design will be available in several editions, including gold Proof, silver Proof, and two Brilliant Uncirculated versions.

Key features of this commemorative coin include:

  • A celebration of the exceptional athletes and para-athletes of Team GB and ParalympicsGB.
  • The coin is dated 2024, marking the 33rd Olympic Games and the 17th Paralympic Games in Paris.
  • This is the fourth consecutive Team GB coin since the inaugural release in 2012, celebrating British athletes’ participation in the Olympic Games.
  • The coin comes with informative packaging detailing the Games and the British Olympic and Paralympic teams.

This official release is a tribute to the icons and legends of British sport, set to create more unforgettable moments at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The United Kingdom has participated in every modern Olympic Games since its inception in 1896. Similarly, the UK has a proud history as the birthplace of Paralympic sport, which began with the Stoke Mandeville Games in 1948 and, much like its Olympic counterpart, has become one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

The collectable 50p coin celebrating Team GB and ParalympicsGB is available to from The Royal Mint’s website, with colour editions of the coin also available. Prices start from £12.
