New $2 coin celebrates 100 years of the RCAF

In celebration of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s (RCAF) 100 years of service, the Royal Canadian Mint today unveiled a commemorative $2 circulation coin, recognizing a historic milestone in Canadian military history.

The coin, which honors the RCAF’s century of dedication and the aircraft that have defined its missions, was officially presented at a ceremony at 17 Wing Winnipeg, Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg.

Designed by Canadian illustrator Pui Yan Fung, the coin’s reverse showcases a variety of aircraft flown by the RCAF over the years. At its center is the CC-130 Hercules, a key player in the RCAF’s transport fleet for over six decades. The upward-facing Hercules is a tribute to the RCAF motto, Sic itur ad astra (“Such is the pathway to the stars”), with the years “1924 2024” inscribed below, symbolizing a century of service. Encircling the core are images of eight historic and current aircraft, including the Finch Mk. II, F-86 Sabre Mk. 6, and CF-188 Hornet.

The obverse features a portrait of King Charles III, designed by Steven Rosati.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland, who spoke at the event, underscored the RCAF’s significant role in safeguarding Canada. “On the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force, we honor the generations of Air Force members who have dedicated their lives to defending our country and preserving our freedom,” Freeland said. She encouraged all Canadians to reflect on this proud legacy and look forward to the future of the RCAF.

Lieutenant General Eric Kenny, Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force, echoed Freeland’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of this partnership between the RCAF and the Royal Canadian Mint. “The Royal Canadian Air Force belongs to all Canadians, and in our centennial year, we are pleased to showcase some of the aircraft that have contributed to training and security at home and abroad,” Kenny said. He expressed his hope that the new coin, which enters into circulation today, would serve as a lasting reminder of the RCAF’s proud heritage.

Marie Lemay, the RCM’s president and CEO spoke about the honor of marking the RCAF’s centennial. “We are proud to have crafted a coin designed to capture many chapters of RCAF history, recognizing the contributions of its members to national security,” she said.

The RCAF, formally established on April 1, 1924, has played a pivotal role in Canada’s defense, peacekeeping missions, and aviation innovation. Beyond its military role, the RCAF continues to be a crucial part of Canada’s search and rescue operations and provides vital support during natural disasters, both domestically and internationally.

To further commemorate the RCAF’s 100th anniversary, the Royal Canadian Mint is offering special collector products. These include limited-edition rolls of 25 uncirculated coins, priced at $79.95, and a Commemorative Collector Keepsake Card featuring both colored and uncolored versions of the coin, retailing for $14.95.

This coin stands as a tribute to the RCAF’s legacy and its unwavering commitment to serving Canadians, both in the skies and on the ground.
