Last month, in a story more than 45 years in the making, sheriff’s deputies in Mississippi saved the day after recovering and returning a rare coin collection stolen in 1972.
The collection was taken from the home of a boy who lived in Charleston, Missouri, nearly half a century ago. The Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office said deputies spotted the collection during a search of a suspected drug dealer’s home this January.
“At first glimpse, I knew this collection didn’t belong there, so the coins were taken for further investigation,” said Mississippi County Sheriff Cory Hutcheson in a press release.
According to the sheriff’s office, while taking inventory of the collection, a deputy spotted a dog tag among the coins. The tag was engraved with the names Jon and Jed Carson, of Charleston.
After learning the Carson family had moved to Florida in 1972, the deputy contacted Jed Carson via social media to inform him of the discovery.
According to the sheriff’s office, Carson was able to describe many of the coins in the collection and provided the deputy with a photograph of himself as a boy posing with the dog in question.
