The United States Mint will release the 2024 American Women Quarters rolls and bags, featuring Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, on June 17.
This quarter marks the 13th coin in the American Women Quarter Program, a four-year initiative celebrating the achievements and contributions of women who have significantly impacted American history and paved the way for future generations.
The reverse of the Dr. Walker quarter showcases a detailed depiction of Dr. Walker holding her pocket surgical kit. She is adorned with the Medal of Honor on her uniform and a surgeon’s pin at her collar. Dr. Walker, a recipient of the Medal of Honor, famously continued to wear it throughout her life. The left side of the design highlights the intricate details of the Medal of Honor. Inscriptions on the coin include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “25 CENTS,” “DR. MARY EDWARDS WALKER,” and “MEDAL OF HONOR 1865.”
The reverse design was created and sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill.
Each coin in the American Women Quarters series features a common obverse design depicting a portrait of George Washington. This design was originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser as a candidate for the 1932 quarter, which commemorated the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth.
Initiated in 2022 and continuing through 2025, the American Women Quarters Program introduces five new quarter dollar reverse designs each year.
