Bill Stefiuk, the president of the Manitoba Coin Club (MCC), has spent much of the pandemic in Flin Flon, Man., about 765 kilometres north of Winnipeg, where he’s working at COVID-19 vaccination centres.
Due to the poor condition of the vehicles he’s given to use, Stefiuk has twice been stranded in minus 30 degrees Celsius and once in minus 41 degrees.
“He is grateful that he always carries a survival kit with him and that help eventually reached him,” wrote MCC member Judy Blackman, adding the wireless Internet and cellular towers are “spotty,” making communication difficult. “Bill extends his sincere gratitude to Kelvin Neufeld, who has been basically doing his and Bill’s job for MCC while Bill is away. Bill misses everybody and hopes this pandemic winds down soon and he can return home.”
