Initiatives aim to enhance connection to the hobby

As I have written previously, we have been making a concerted effort in recent months to enhance our connection with Canadian coin clubs and affiliated organizations.

As of this column, I have been invited to club meetings as a guest speaker. This not only provides me with the opportunity to speak about the history and vision of Canadian Coin News; it also serves as a great venue to receive feedback from collectors on how we can improve our magazine for the enjoyment of all readers.

It has also served as a great opportunity to exchange ideas on how we can collectively improve the hobby experience for both the beginner and seasoned collector, and how we can entice the “closet collector” to attend club meetings and shows.

This has proven to be a worthwhile exchange as I have seen some of these clubs delve into how they can better market themselves, externally and internally.

While our Ontario-based location limits us as to how far we can travel, I am looking at ways to reach out to clubs outside of this province through mediums such as Skype and live Internet chats. With today’s technology, there are a variety of convenient ways we can connect with you.

We are also looking for ideas on how we can better cover club meetings, especially presentations from their guest speakers. I have been impressed with some of the guest speaker reviews I have read in some of the newsletters we receive from clubs across this great country.

Some members have asked me how they can better market themselves through Canadian Coin News. It’s not difficult. One of the easiest ways is to include us on your mailing or email list, especially newsletters, which most clubs have and circulate on a regular basis.  In particular, if you have a great speaker you feel other collectors should read about, send me a copy of the presentation that we could either print, or follow up with our own story.

Information and research: this is what drives the passion of many numismatists, no matter their area of interest. Help us share this information with your fellow CCN subscribers. Send me your newsletters, as we will use these leads for a new column we will be launching soon, featuring highlights from clubs across Canada.

If you have any other ideas on how we can “enhance our connection,” email me (mwalsh@trajan.ca), call me (905-646-7744), or send a letter to Trajan Media, 103 Lakeshore Rd.,  Suite 202, St. Catharines, ON L2N 2T6.
