Indonesia’s central bank denies social media rumours of new banknote

Following social media rumours suggesting it had issued a new, high-denomination banknote, the Bank of Indonesia has issued a statement denying those claims.

Indonesia Newsstand reports the Bank of Indonesia (BI) has denied it issued a 200,000-rupiah banknote featuring an image of a peacock, which is what was circulating on social media last week.

“It’s not true; because if it is true, it would have been announced long before the issuance,” said BI West Sumatra Chapter Chair Puji Atmoko in a press conference last week, adding BI would have made an announcement at least six months before issuing a new banknote. “We have not made any announcement but it has been circulating; it’s peculiar.”
