The University of Calgary’s Nickle Galleries will once again host a premier gathering of numismatic minds as the Third Annual Numismatics Symposium: Money, Art and More returns May 24–25, 2025. Held in partnership with the Calgary Numismatic Society, the two-day event will bring together scholars, collectors, and artists to explore the cultural, historical, and artistic dimensions of coinage and medals from across the globe.
Among the highlights is a keynote by David Bergeron of the Bank of Canada Museum, who will delve into the 1937 Coin Modernization Program — a pivotal moment in Canada’s coinage history. He’ll be joined by other notable presenters including Scott Douglas on medals awarded to Dr. Barnardo’s Home Children, Philip Attwood of the British Museum on Mary Gillick’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, and Susan Taylor, former senior engraver with the Royal Canadian Mint, who will speak on classical iconography in medallic art.
Workshops and talks by specialists such as François Rufiange, Durga Kale, and Geraldine Chimirri-Russell will cover topics ranging from ancient Athenian coinage and Mughal numismatics to modern counterfeit detection. With presenters spanning academia, museum curation, and professional engraving, the symposium promises a truly international and multidisciplinary perspective.
Open to collectors of all levels, from beginners to advanced researchers, the event offers a rare opportunity to engage with numismatic thought leaders in an intimate academic setting. Registration is free and includes lunch on both days.
