Canadian sovereigns at Heritage sale

In one of a series of sales hosted in conjunction with this spring’s Central States Numismatic Society Convention, Heritage Auctions brought in almost $14.5 million US (about $18.8 million Cdn.) across nearly 2,000 lots.

With more than 3,400 bidders, the May 5-7 sale offered 17 Canadian coins, of which the highest earner was a 1908-C gold specimen sovereign from the series’ first year of issue. Certified as Specimen-64 by Professional Coin Grading Service, it was one of just 636 specimens struck at the Ottawa branch of the British Royal Mint that year.

With more than 3,400 bidders, the May 5-7 sale offered 17 Canadian coins.

It brought $19,200 US (about $24,900 Cdn.), including buyer’s premium, topping its estimate by $5,000 as Lot 30174. The following lot offered a second Canadian sovereign, this one a 1909-C from the series’ second year, which had a mintage of 16,273. In Mint State-64, it sold for $13,200 US (about $17,125 Cdn.). Rounding out the top three Canadian lots was another 1909-C sovereign in Mint State-62; it brought $4,560 US (about $5,900 Cdn.) as Lot 31544.

The sale’s top-earning lot was the finest known 1920-S Australian sovereign, certified as Mint State-64-plus, which brought $552,000 US (about $715,225 Cdn.) as Lot 30154
