Auction preview: First Burd Library sale taking place next month

Next month, Kolbe & Fanning Numismatic Booksellers will offer the numismatic library of Chicago coin dealer and President of the Chicago Coin Company William A. Burd in several auctions.

According to auctioneers, The Burd Library is well known to many within the numismatic community because of the Burd’s willingness to make his library available for other numismatists and researchers at his Chicago Coin Company offices. With more than 10,000 items on its shelves, Burd’s library was comprehensive and covered material from the 16th century through the modern day.

The first sale—Sale 147, which will take place on Oct. 7—will feature hundreds of lots from The Burd Library while the highlights will form the foundation of our 2018 New York Book Auction, which will be held in conjunction with the New York International Numismatic Convention (NYINC) on Jan. 13, 2018. Additional items will be offered in other mail-bid and “buy or bid” sales.

According to auctioneers, highlights include:

  • an “exceptional” complete set of Ennio Quirino Visconti and Antoine Mongez’s Iconographie Grecque et Romaine;
  • the “extremely rare and virtually unknown” first issue, in book form, of Louis XIV’s collection of ancient coins;
  • “perhaps the finest” extant deluxe copy of Browning on U.S. quarter dollars;
  • a deluxe, large-format Bureau of Engraving and Printing vignette book featuring 223 engravings; and
  • a “superlative example” of Ricaud de Tiregale’s masterwork on Russian medals.

In 2009, Burd was honoured with the American Numismatic Association Presidential Award for his contributions to numismatics through the creation of his library.
