This Sunday, Kitchener, Ont.’s Colonial Acres will host its 750-lot Mint Product Auction.
Among the top highlights of the upcoming sale is Lot 30, a tax-exempt 2017-dated one-kilogram Fine silver coin depicting an African elephant. Struck by the Bavarian State Mint in Germany, this coin has a face value of 2000 shillings. Its design features a single elephant on an African plain alongside a palm tree and a hut. The opposite side shows the shield of Somalia, which is a crowned coat of arms with a leopard on each side.
This lot has an estimate of $925.
RENEWED SILVER DOLLAR
Other highlights include Lot 8, a “very scarce” 2015 silver dollar that recreates the iconic Voyageur design in two ounces of 99.99 per cent pure silver. The coin also features 99.99 per cent gold plating on both the obverse and reverse. It was the first coin in the Royal Canadian Mint’s “renewed silver dollar” series celebrating historic proof dollar designs. The series began with Canada’s first silver dollar, which was designed by renowned sculptor Emanuel Hahn and issued in 1935.

On its reverse, the 2015 silver dollar depicts the famous scene: a canoe traverses the horizontal centre of the design carrying a European voyageur paddling at the stern and a First Nations man paddling at the bow. Between them are bundles of wrapped furs. The bundle closest to the bow is marked with the initials “HB” for Hudson’s Bay Company. A calm waterline runs along the starboard side of the vessel. In the background, two wind-swept pines rise from the centre of a smooth, semi-circular island. Stylized vertical rays representing the northern lights cross the sky. The canoe, travellers, island, and pines are plated in 99.99 per cent pure gold. The reverse is engraved with the words “CANADA” and “DOLLAR” and the commemorative dates “1935-2015.”
The obverse features the effigy of King George V by British artist Percy Metcalfe from the original 1935 silver $1 coin, as well as the legend “GEORGIVS V REX IMPERATOR ANNO REGNI XXV” (George V, King and Emperor, 25th Year of Reign). The King’s crown and mantle are also plated in 99.99 per cent pure gold.
This coin has a weight of 62.67 grams and a 54-mm diameter. Ninety per cent of the entire mintage of 2,200 coins was reserved for Masters Club members.

2016 MINT ERROR
Rounding out the highlights is Lot 481, a sealed Uncirculated Proof-like six-coin set issued by the Mint in 2016; however, the set’s $1 coin has a 2015 year-date. This error has an estimate of $250.
Bidding began on June 2 and the live auction will take place at noon on June 18 at the Kitchener-based business.
