A lasting legacy: remembering André Langlois — author, dealer and collector

Renowned author, dealer, and lifelong member of the Boucherville Numismatists and Philatelists Association Inc., André Langlois passed away on Saturday, Dec. 14, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Langlois leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by the numismatic community for generations.

Released in 2015, André Langlois’s book on grading Canadian coins has become an essential reference.

A pillar of Canadian numismatics, Langlois was perhaps best known for his groundbreaking book, Guide for Grading Coins of Canada. Widely regarded as an essential reference, the book set a benchmark for consistent and accurate coin grading, earning praise from collectors and dealers alike. Langlois’s meticulous attention to detail and dedication to education have ensured the guide remains a cornerstone of Canadian numismatics since its release in 2015.

Beyond his literary contributions, Langlois was an active participant and leader in the numismatic community. As a lifelong member of the Boucherville Numismatists and Philatelists Association Inc., he played a key role in fostering a welcoming and educational environment for enthusiasts of all levels. His passion for numismatics extended to mentoring new collectors and advocating for standards that enhanced the integrity of the hobby.

Langlois’s influence also reached the commercial side of numismatics. As a respected dealer, he provided countless collectors with the tools, coins, and insights necessary to build meaningful collections. His reputation for fairness and expertise made him a trusted figure in the marketplace.

In addition to his professional achievements, Langlois was known for his warm personality and genuine enthusiasm for coins and history. His ability to share stories and insights about Canadian numismatics brought joy and inspiration to those who had the privilege of knowing him.

André Langlois is survived by his family and a vast network of friends and colleagues who will miss his wisdom, kindness, and dedication. Plans for a memorial service have not yet been announced. More details will be shared when they become available.

The numismatic community will undoubtedly feel the absence of André Langlois, but his contributions—both written and personal—ensure that his legacy will endure. In his honour, collectors are encouraged to continue his mission of learning, teaching, and fostering a love for numismatics.
