The Royal Mint will be issuing a commemorative UK 50-pence coin to honor the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. The reverse design, to be revealed before the upcoming anniversary on June 6, will portray Allied soldiers disembarking from a landing craft, accompanied by the inscription “D-DAY 6 JUNE 1944 UTAH OMAHA GOLD JUNO SWORD,” representing the five assault beaches of Normandy. On the obverse side, King Charles III’s official coinage portrait will be featured.
Mint spokesperson Rebecca Morg stated, “This year marks eight decades since the D-Day landings, a day of immense significance in our nation’s history. For centuries, we’ve commemorated historic events on coins, and we are honored to recognize the bravery of all involved in this pivotal operation.”
As of April 11, customers can register their interest for updates on this new release through The Royal Mint website, royalmint.com.
