2018 RCNA Convention medal features Avro Arrow

Sixty years after its maiden flight at Malton, Ont., the Avro Arrow CF-105 aircraft will be featured on the 2018 Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA) Convention medal.

The North York Coin Club – the host club for this year’s convention, which will be held Aug. 7-11 in Mississauga, Ont. – chose the aeronautical achievement considered by many to be the pinnacle of Canada’s aviation history. At the time of its first flight in 1958, the Avro Arrow was the most advanced delta-winged interceptor aircraft in the world.

“It is an honour to commemorate this event with a medal, and it’s also a privilege to meet someone who has firsthand information about that turbulent time in political and aeronautical history in Canada,” reads the RCNA website, which explains this year’s convention committee arranged to have Claude Sherwood, a draftsman for the Arrow project, as the show’s banquet speaker.

“He’ll relate his experiences and illustrate them with some rare video and pictures of the project. You’ll want to be in attendance at the closing banquet!”
